One doesn't.  The abundance of bad manuals from 
good programmers proves it.

The best grounding, IMO, for programming if nothing 
else is provided is symbolic logic.  Otherwise, 
history and music.

Computer science is deeper than programming, though.

Too many programmers think that they don't need linear algebra because
they are not going to compute eigenvalues. It is like thinking that one
does not need to be taught classical literature or poetry because
he/she is not going to become a writer.
