The XER stuff is probably closest to XML, but I'd even like to see a BER
parser, maybe using type names as pseudo-element names when schemas are
unavailable.

A PER parser that ran only when a schema was available would be cool
too.

(If I only had the time.)

I left out the low cost of XML tools in my "why XML took off" bit
earlier, but it's definitely a factor.
