I'm a big Java user, but from my work on FlightGear I've come to the conclusion that units are more important than data types. I don't care too much if "7" is meant to be handled as a string, a short, an int, a long, a float, or a double -- I'll do whatever makes sense for my own program anyway -- but I care quite a bit whether it refers to feet or meters. In FlightGear, for now, we're simply dealing with units through naming conventions (i.e. /position/altitude-ft), but something more robust and machine-readable would be very nice.
