I found it surprising that W3C doesn't at least encourage an exploration of such issues. Maybe my suggested classification was hopelessly naive. But attempting to arrive at a classification of semantics seems to me to be a potentially useful endeavour. Not least since it could assist communication about what we can or cannot tell about the content of an XML document. Andrew Watt
