I was wondering why I used xs:gMonth instead of the types I was interested in and just realized that it was the infamous backwards incompatible errata which had been nagging at my subconscious bursting forth. Freudian it is...

Granted that Jing shouldn't crash, the corrected syntax for gMonth is "--11"
(see http://www.w3.org/2001/05/xmlschema-errata.html#Errata2 at E2-12)
and that does work fine.
