Sure, initially there will be incompatibilities among implementations, but as long as vendors are committed to interoperability these will get ironed out. There's no reason to believe the situation would be any different if the Update spec came from the W3C instead of a vendor consortium. The W3C has taken a lot of heat for not supporting updates in XQuery 1.0. In my opinion they're doing exactly the right thing here.
