I like extensible type systems.

I also like some bedrock types, like integers, that everybody supports in 
the same way. In practice, I think most people using RELAX-NG wind up using 
the XML Schema types anyway when they use types.

XQuery could cope well with an extensible schema type system, if one were 
adopted.
