Good point, thanks. So the process is actually:
document ---> PSVI ---> node tree ---> node tree ---> document
(parsing) (building) (transforming) (serialising)
+---------------------------+
XSLT processors
+------------------------------------------------------+
XSLT applications
All XSLT processors need to govern the building and transforming
aspects; xsl:strip-space and xsl:preserve-space give control over the
building.
Standalone XSLT applications need to control the parsing and
serialising stages as well.
