BTW, I should clarify that I have no specific complaints against the XQuery formal model spec.  I haven't read it, after all.  My spleen is mostly resolved for XML Schema Data Types.  And even that is insofar as it represents a fundamental addition to the XML "formal model" (i.e. the Infoset) rather than just a bunch of convenient lexical rules for common data constraints.
