I agree. I think XPointer violates the 80/20 rule. The text range selection
supports valid use cases, but I think these use cases are far less common
than those that want a simple method for addressing nodes in a document. I
don't think these latter more prevalent use cases should have to pay the
price of complexity for supporting the former more narrow use cases.
