W3C XML Schema does not directly support co-constraints, e.g. between
attributes, of the sort you require.  The closest we get is the
xsi:type workaround you've been offered already.

The XML Schema Working Group is aware that this is at the top of many
people's wishlists for the next version of W3C XML Schema.
