Actually I think the DOM is one of the more successful XML spinoffs. I  use
it every day in my work!

Just for fun here is a compilation of  how often I use a W3C spec in my day
to day  paid (as opposed to academic or writing articles) work.

xhtml (or HTML)100%
 DOM 100%
 CSS 100%
 DTD's 98%
Xpath 95% (if you include #...)
XSLT 70%
RDF 40%
Xpath 25% (if you exclude #...)
SAX 20% (Ok sorry David M, I know it's not W3C)
XML Schemas (< 1%)

I would love to use SVG but the servers I use do not support it. If they did
then the figure would probably be 80% ( I do a lot of graphical analysis)
