I'd further like to mention that the XML compression system that dbXML
implements is very similar, allowing you to traverse pre-parsed XML
graphs without having to de-serialize parts of the graph that you're not
interested in.  It is specified in
http://www.dbxml.org/docs/CoreSpecs.pdf
