Simon, There is some work going on in DOM Level 3 to provide a standard API to schema information ( including type info ) which includes support for the XML Schema stuff. I've been thinking about event based interfaces for schema for a while now, I'll probably publish something in the next couple of months. So I guess in the medium term there will be some APIs, how popular they wil become, who knows...
