I want to thank Miko Matsumura for his phrase "meritocracy of geeks" which I
found in the article Simon cited. In three words he explains why
"standards" -- behold SAX -- get embraced or forgotten. -Mike

I don't know how it'll turn out, but it suggests that the model used for
the creation of XML and XML-related specs at the W3C is not everyone's
favorite.
