Subject: What is a real standard? (Was: RE: standards body parallel)

Curious, Lisa. Could you pass the word here as to
what a real standard is?

1. Last I heard the word, the W3C issues specs, not
standards. Publically, they assert a difference.
So are you saying real standards are done elsewhere?

2. Is there a credible difference or is the
W3C being disingenuous about that?

3. If the W3C is being disingenuous, why? If
the mission is to incubate technology, why be
involved in standards administration? Wouldn't
it be better to get the technology in place then
leave standardization to the "elsewheres" that
specialize in that work?

It was too late, the word was out (the word is still out)
on what a real standard is.
