I think we can figure this out.
 
Big companies have big sway in the standards bodies because little companies like to do deals with big companies, and big companies also like to do deals with other big companies.
 
It's true that the little folk can make a contribution, usually before the big guys get interested, and sometimes such contributions are acknowledged and benefit the little guy. Sometimes of course they don't.
 
The nice thing about the Web is that it's brought some respect to the power of the individual. TBL gave us all a big boost with his success, now the minds are at least a bit more open to it.
