to convert rtf you may also want to look at a tool called Balise which
parses sgml, xml, and rtf.  should still be available at www.us.balise.com.
i seem to remember it supports (only) rtf 1.5 (no fancy new word2k tables),
but has an extension mechanism for unknown control words.
