use the xsl:text element, eg:

> 
>           <xsl:value-of select="creator/firstname"/>
	<xsl:text> </xsl:text>
>           <xsl:value-of select="creator/lastname"/>
> 

should do it. 

You might want to check the xsl-list

for pure xslt and fo questions.
