You may find a prototype  I did last year that I called MuXML
(http://www.jfinity.com/muxml/) useful (at least conceptually) for
this problem domain. It focused on the problem of efficiently handling
multiple parallel streams (accessed via HTTP) of XML content with a
primary use case being that of merging the streams.
