> But doesn't the idea of arbitrary numeric codes violate the spirit of XML, > which was supposed to encourage human-readable and self-explanatory markup? A standard code is arbitrary to the extent that a standard DTD or schema is arbitrary. More important, you do not forego human readability. You can use Xlink to map the code to text. For example, someone reading the English version might see <Waste> depleted Dilithium </Waste> instead of <MS200> depleted Dilithium </MS200>. ================== Ken North ============================= http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Ken_North =========================================================== See you at AD2000 London (www.applicationdevelopment.com) XML DevCon 2000 New York City (www.xmldevcon2000.com) =========================================================== *************************************************************************** This is xml-dev, the mailing list for XML developers.
