John, what if it is the processing model that defines the data representation, in effect, the means of declarartion? VRML is an application language that from the inception was targeted to object-oriented implementation. Is the XML system of a root based, positional hierarchy with attributes the right way to express a node based definition in which hierarchies are expressed as field types? While the groves definition is clean, the XML definition forces us to choose between wrapper tags or the XML property set for the hierarchy. The crux is wrapper tags to name fields such that the hierarchy is rootless even if the grove definition has a synthetic root. len
