For SAX2, I'd prefer taking the opportunity to converge
more with DOM2 where appropriate.  Thus,

  void startElement(SaxNode node);

interface SaxNode {
  readonly attribute String nodeName;
  readonly attribute String nodeValue;    // could raise Exception... 
  readonly attribute unsigned short nodeType;
  readonly attribute Node parentNode;
  readonly attribute NamedNodeMap attributes;
  readonly attribute String prefix;
  readonly attribute String namespaceURI;
  readonly attribute String localName; 
};

such that

interface DomNode extends SaxNode {
 ... adds child access, mutable methods, etc ...
};

This would make everyone's life *far* easier.
