How about this?

	<element <att>val</att>> <content/> </element>

This is for sure not XML/SGML, but it generalizes the recursive
pattern.  If you want an attribute on the attribute, you write:

	<element <att <att-of-att>subvalue</att-of-att>>val</att>>  ...
