Having an easy way to convert XML documents to Java objects is (IMHO) a great idea. But I don't like code generators. And XML Data Binding looks like yet another reason to tie a project to a particular vendor's proprietary IDE. MDSAX could be an answer, but it has been difficult to understand and harder to use. But that is no longer true. MDSAX 2.0 has been reworked with the intent of making it easy to use. Like XML Data Binding, MDSAX uses a schema to drive the conversion of XML documents into application-specific Java objects. But MDSAX is designed to work with existing objects (like Swing components), rather than forcing a programmer to subclass generated code.
