Here's what I do to display a document in a Swing TextArea:

 public class XMLText extends JPanel
{
    TXDocument doc;
    JTextArea textArea;

/**
 * Resets the text in the panel
 */
   public void refresh()
    {
      ByteArrayOutputStream outputStream = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
     try {
           doc.print(new PrintWriter(new
OutputStreamWriter(outputStream)));}
     catch (IOException e) {
         System.out.println ("IO Exception in XMLText:refresh");}
     String XMLText = outputStream.toString();
     textArea.setText(XMLText);
     repaint();

     }
