charecters takes an array of characters for the data :

  public abstract void characters(char ch[],
                                  int start,
                                  int length) throws SAXException

  processingInstruction takes a String for the data :

  public abstract void processingInstruction(String target,
                                             String data) throws SAXException

  Why is there this difference in SAX ?
