Stylus Studio – XSLT Back-Mapping

At the end of June 2002, our team published “Stylus Studio 2004”, at that time it was the very first XML to XML mapping with Two-way editing and after 15 years Stylus Studio still owns that leadership feature. http://www.stylusstudio.com/xml-to-xml-mapper.html

In the same 2004 release, we managed to publish another revolutionary, industry first feature called “XSLT Back-Mapping”.

Back-mapping is the ability to visually link the transformation output to the XSLT instruction that originated it. In the screenshot below, you can see an example of XSLT transformation with three match templates.

After the transformation completes the result is captured in the Preview window which can render the output data as text with syntax coloring, browser preview using Internet Explorer and trough a scalable tree control. The Text view and the Tree View both support back mapping for XML output, the browser view support back mapping for HTML output.

When the user click on any area of the output data Stylus Studio displays a blue marker in the XSLT editor, on the XSLT instruction responsible for the output fragment.

In addition, Stylus Studio shows the entire execution stack which represents the chain of template calls up to the point when the output was generated.

In the following screenshot, we see an XSLT transformation which outputs HTML, Stylus Studio Back-mapping in this example is even more impressive, it allows to click on any HTML component and back trace the execution to the XSLT which generated the HTML element. Here for example we have clicked on the DVD price and we can see from where the value was originated.

DataDirect XQuery, CDATA Sections and Namespace

Some time you may need to wrap text node in a CDATA section as part of your XQuery development. For example say you need to generate the following document

The following query makes use of a processor specific XQuery option called ddtek:serialize

Notice the syntax to define an expanded QName with namespace is { {uri} local-name } which is different from what is erroneously described in the XQuery Tips & Tricks

The second takeaway is how the content inside sf:Resource needs to be escaped text to produce the required result

Acrobat Reader Error (103:103)

If you start experiencing the following error while running a transformation that output PDF and your Preview window does not load, you may need to change your Acrobat Reader settings

Exists Stylus Studio and open Acrobat Reader then navigate to Edit -> Preferences… -> Security (Enhanced) and un-check “Enable Protected Mode at startup”, click Yes into the warning dialog then exit Acrobat Reader.
